Statistics is a mathematical science dealing with the collection, analysis, and interpretation of data. It has also been defined as the gathering of data for the purpose of making decisions in the presence of uncertainty. Statistics is important in virtually all areas of science, technology, and research, and is a useful tool in the world of business and finance.
The Double Honours degree in Mathematics/Applied Mathematics and Statistics focuses on theoretical work, backed up with a thorough training in practical computer-based statistical techniques. The other option – a Double honours degree in Statistics and another subject – is more applied in nature, and aimed at students who want to combine a Science subject with a solid understanding of modern statistical methods.
Under both options you will gain a grounding in current statistical methodologies and measurements, acquiring strong numeracy and analytical skills. You will also learn to present and communicate data coherently.
Course Structure
Statistics is taken as a Double Honours Bachelor of Science degree.
All First Year Science students must take Mathematics and three other subjects. In First and Second Year, students take Statistics as part of Mathematics. In Third Year, students who have taken Mathematics in First and Second Year have the option of pursuing a Double Honours degree in either Mathematics/Applied Mathematics and Statistics, or Statistics and another subject.
Career Options
Graduates have a range of career options open to them, including areas such as the Civil Service, industry and business, scientific research, medical research, environmental research, financial services, and actuarial roles.
Postgraduate Options
- Masters or PhD in Statistics
- Masters or PhD in Mathematics
- Masters or PhD in Computing
