All first year Science students must take Mathematics
and three other subjects from:
- Biology
- Chemistry
- Computer Science
- Experimental Physics
- Mathematical Physics
Subjects are offered at a common level. Students have
a number of weeks at the beginning of First Year to
choose their subjects.
Degree Structures and Levels
Results in Second Year Mathematics determine whether
students may take Mathematics or Applied Mathematics
in Third Year, if they wish to continue studying
Mathematics. Results in Third Science examinations
determine the options available in Fourth Year.
Students continue with three of their First Year subjects.
Students choosing Computer Science must also take
Mathematics. Mathematical Physics may be combined
with Chemistry, but this combination is not permitted in
Third Year. Students should bear this in mind if selecting
these two subjects in Second Year.
Students take two of their Second Year subjects in
Third Year. Students require 45% in their Third Year
examination to proceed in that subject in Fourth Year.
Students may opt for either a Double or Single Honours
Programme in Fourth Year.
Students take two subjects in Third and Fourth Year.
Students choose two subjects from: Biology,
Chemistry*, Computer Science, Experimental Physics**,
Mathematical Physics*, Mathematics, Applied
Mathematics or Statistics**. Statistics is based on
foundation material which is part of the Mathematics
Course in First and Second Year.
Students take two subjects in Third Year and proceed to
Fourth Year with their Single Honours subject.
Students choose two subjects in Third Year from:
Biology, Chemistry*, Computer Science, Experimental
Physics**, Mathematical Physics*, Mathematics, Applied
Mathematics or Statistics**.
Students choose one subject in Fourth Year from:
Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Experimental
Physics, Mathematics, Applied Mathematics or
Mathematical Physics.
Note:
• Statistics is not available as a Single Honours Degree.
* Mathematical Physics may not be combined with Chemistry.
Results in Third Science examinations determine the options available in Fourth Year except for Mathematics where second Science examination determine whether students can undertake Mathematics or Applied Mathematics in Third and Fourth Year. Students may proceed at Honours level as follows:

| MH201 | Two Honours Degree options are available: Route 1) Single Honours – Four subjects studied at common level in First Year, three in Second, and two subjects studied at honours level in Third and a single subject studied at honours level in the Fourth Year. Subjects available are: Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Experimental Physics, Mathematics and Theoretical Physics § . This route is suitable for those wishing to specialise in a single honours discipline. Route 2) Double Honours – Both of the subjects are studied at honours level in the Third Year are continued into Fourth Year. Mathematics (Applied) and Statistics are available in addition to all of the subjects listed under Route 1). This route is suitable for those wishing to obtain a broader, more interdisciplinary Science Degree |
