Our modern world is run on computing power. PCs, mobile phones, telecoms networks, medical equipment, air traffic control, satellite navigation – hardly any area of 21st century life is untouched by computers. Computer Science is the study of the hardware and software within computers.
As a student, you will have access to NUI Maynooth's state-of-the-art computer labs as you learn how to make a computer act intelligently, and how to develop software to a professional level. You will learn about the history and future of computers, how they process information, and how they interact with other devices.
You will acquire hands-on programming skills, including various industry-standard programming languages such as C++. You will also gain advanced problem-solving techniques and learn to think logically and analytically when approaching complex issues. You will also develop your creativity and communication skills.
Course Structure
Computer Science can be taken as a Single Honours or Double Honours Bachelor of Science degree.
All First Year Science students must take Mathematics and three other subjects. In Second Year, students take Computer Science, Mathematics, and one of their First Year subjects. In Third Year, students take Computer Science and one of their Second Year subjects. (Students intending to take Computer Science as a Single Honours degree must take Mathematics in Third Year.) In Fourth Year, Computer Science is taken at Single or Double Honours level. Double Honours students take Computer Science and one of their Third Year subjects. Single Honours students take Computer Science only.
Career Options
As the Government works to position Ireland as a 'knowledge economy', IT skills are in high demand. Career opportunities are many and varied, and include work in areas such as graphical interface design, medical imaging, video-based information systems, multimedia systems development, electronic publishing, computer-assisted translation, e-learning systems development, games development, website design and development, and software development. IT skills are also in demand in non-computing industries, such as financial services, business and administration, health services, and the automobile and aeronautics sectors.
Postgraduate Options
- MSc in Computer Science
- PhD in Computer Science
