The BBS/BBS in Business and Accounting is a comprehensive programme of study where you will learn about key areas of management and accounting while preparing for a professional career as an accountant. This degree is primarily aimed at students who wish to work as accountants in an accountancy practice, in consultancy or in industry.

Accounting is the language of finance and business. Accountants compile, analyse, interpret and communicate essential information about the operations of a business – whether that business be a small firm, a publicly traded corporation or an NGO (non-governmental organisation). Decisions are made based on the information provided by accountants; good accounting is crucial to any organisation's success. Students will gain an excellent foundation in leadership, management of organisations, and the financial analysis and measurement of performance.

Studying Business and Accounting together will provide you with an excellent set of technical accounting skills, coupled with a thorough appreciation of the world of business and management. As a working accountant after graduation, you will interact with senior business managers – an understanding of the issues they face is a key asset. Graduates are entitled to exemptions from CAP 1 examinations from the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Ireland and equivalent examination papers from the ACCA, CIMA and CPA professional accounting bodies. Students who choose not to pursue professional accountancy after graduation will benefit from a solid grounding in broad business topics. Skills in marketing, management, and human resource management – as well as strong financial and numeracy abilities – will make you a valuable member of any business team.

Course Structure

As a Single Honours Bachelor of Business Studies (BBS) degree, a range of business and management subjects are taken, with a strong emphasis on accounting.

There is an option to convert the BBS to a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) by extending your degree to 4 years. On satisfactory completion of 2nd year, students have an option to take a one year paid work placement. The placement is arranged by the university placement officer. The placement provides students with experience that significantly enhances their employment opportunities on completion of the degree.

On satisfactory completion of the third year work placement students can apply for conversion to the Bachelor of Business Administration degree award which recognises their work experience. On satisfactory completion of the course work students are awarded a Bachelor of Business Administration in Business and Accounting.

All students must pass the ECDL (European Computer Driving License) to proceed to Second Year. The ECDL course is available at the university.

Career Options

Graduates are likely to be primarily focused on a professional accountancy qualification, but they can also consider careers in service or manufacturing organisations in general management, marketing, sales, operations, accounting, project management, MIS and Human Resource Management functions. Careers in banking and financial institutions are also common options. Careers in consulting, public service and not for profit organisations are all potential options.  Many graduates will wish to take a postgraduate degree before taking up employment and NUI Maynooth offers a range of suitable high-quality programmes.
