As a student of Business, you will gain a firm grounding in all key areas of business administration and management. Management, marketing, operations management, organisational behaviour, project management, human resource management, information technology and innovation management – these are just some of the broad range of topics you will study, preparing you for entry into multiple avenues of business.
The option to combine Business with the study of another Arts subject gives you great flexibility and a broad skill set. The broad sweep of this course means you won't be limited by choosing a specialty too early on, while giving you a solid foundation in each of the many areas that make up business life. You will learn to think analytically and to communicate effectively. You will also develop numeracy and presentation skills. On completion of the degree students will have gained an excellent foundation in leadership and management of organisations.
Course Structure
As a Double Honours BA degree, Business is taken with two other subjects in First Year (Economics is recommended), and with one other subject in Second and Third Year.
Additionally, places are available in second year of the BBS/BBA Business and Management degree programme (MH404) and these are allocated on the basis of first year results in Business. Students who obtain 60% or are in the top half of the class (whichever is the greater number of places) in the Business subject may progress into second year of BBS/BBA Business and Management (MH404).
Business students who take Law and a third arts subject (Economics is recommended), and who achieve 60% in the Law subject or are placed in the top 15 students in the Law subject (whichever is greater number of places) may transfer to the BBL Law and Business degree (MH406) at the start of Second Year. If fewer than 15 students achieve 60 percent, the remaining places will be allocated based on Law examination results. .
Career Options
Graduates are well placed to join service or manufacturing organisations in general management, marketing, sales, operations, MIS and Human Resource Management functions. Careers in banking and financial institutions are also common options. Careers in consulting, public service and not for profit organisations are all potential options. Many graduates will wish to take a postgraduate degree before taking up employment and NUI Maynooth offers a range of suitable high-quality programmes.
