Studying Multimedia
The digital revolution is transforming how we communicate, how we express ourselves, and how we form communities. This dynamic programme encompasses the twin challenges of learning to use media technologies creatively and learning to analyse the impact of new media on society and individuals. As a student, you will have an opportunity to explore what happens when technology and imagination meet.
Kairos Communications, a leading independent television and radio production company, will deliver part of the course. You will gain practical experience in a professional studio environment, learning to master computing and programming, cameras and sound recording equipment, and web design and interactive authoring. You will also study the social, cultural, and human implications of new media and the computer science that underly them.
As the creation of multimedia content is often collaborative, you will be encouraged to work on practical projects in groups, developing team-building and networking skills. You will develop your individual creativity, rooted in theoretical reflection and a solid skills base.
Course Structure
Multimedia is taken as a Single Honours Bachelor of Science degree.
In First Year, students take Multimedia, Mathematics, and one other subject from Biology, Chemistry, Experimental Physics, Mathematical Physics.
Students who do not wish to continue with the BSc Multimedia after First Year may transfer to MH201, continuing with Computer Science, Mathematics, and their other Science subject.
In Second, Third, and Fourth Year, students take Multimedia topics only. In Third Year, students must complete a full-year work placement.
A Bachelor of Arts Multimedia degree is also available, see page 124 for details.
Career Options
The world of multimedia production is still being defined, and the delivery of new, interactive forms of entertainment and information are still being explored. Graduates will benefit from a combination of enhanced creativity, practical production skills, and a solid grounding in the theories behind new media. Students should be prepared to enter areas such as web design, game design, or television, radio, video, and film production. They may also consider careers in other areas of the media, such as journalism, research, marketing, advertising, and public relations.
