As a student of Music, you will explore the music composition of various styles and periods, complemented by detailed analytical and historical studies. Performance is an important aspect of the course: you will be expected to take tuition to an advanced level on an instrument of your choice, to maintain a high standard of performance and to take an active part in one of the Department's choirs or in an alternative vocal or instrumental ensemble.
As a student, you will gain a solid foundation in practical, compositional and academic work, you will also have the opportunity to specialise in either composition, musicology, or performance. You will be encouraged to develop your creative potential through studies in traditional and electroacoustic composition, classical repertoire and topics such as ethnomusicology, jazz and popular music and music therapy.
Performance is an important aspect of the course; you will be expected to develop your performance skills through individual tuition in an approved instrument/ voice and to take an active park in one of the Department’s approved vocal or instrumental ensembles. You will also be encouraged to develop your creative potential through studies in acoustic and electroacoustic composition. The benefits of studying Music include intellectual adaptability, a capacity for the analytical assessment of complicated issues and the imaginative resolution of complex problems. You will also gain the ability to perform in a disciplined manner under pressure.
Course Structure
As a Single Honours Bachelor of Music degree, Music is taken with one other subject in First Year. Students take Music only in Second and Third Year.
The Department can arrange instrumental tuition on campus for the convenience of students.
Note: You must apply for this course before February 1st. Applicants for the BMus must be able to demonstrate, at audition, a minimum of Grade 6 (ABRSM) on a standard orchestral instrument, piano, organ, classical guitar or voice; traditional Irish instrumentalists of a comparable fluency will also be considered. Prospective students must complete a short entrance test of general musicianship. (More information on the application process and a sample test are on page 112 of the online prospectus).
Students who opt to spend a year studying abroad are awarded a BMus (International) degree.
