County Kildare and the surrounding areas are at the heart of Ireland's multi-million-euro thoroughbred racing and breeding industry, and home to both Horse Racing Ireland and Horse Sport Ireland, the government agencies set up to promote thoroughbred racing and equestrian sport respectively.
As a student at NUI Maynooth, you will gain an insight into key areas of the equine industry, including racecourse and equine event management, stud farm business management and the equine leisure and tourism sector. The equine aspects of the course are applied in nature , and modules have been developed in conjunction with equine industry experts. You will also develop a firm grounding in enterprise and management skills in general, exploring core business disciplines such as marketing, human resources, accounting, finance, and business law.
Course Structure
As a Single Honours Bachelor of Business Studies (BBS) degree, a range of business and management subjects are taken in First, Second, and Third Year.
Summer work placements are a compulsory element of the course. Placements are organised by the university in key equine industry subsectors.
There is also an option to convert the BBS to a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) by extending your degree to 4 years. Students undertake a paid business work placement in the equine industry (organised by the university and subject to availability) in Third Year and complete the taught coursework in Fourth Year. On successful completion of the course, students are awarded a BBA in Equine Business.
All students must pass the ECDL (European Computer Driving License) to proceed to Second Year. The ECDL course is available at the university.

A number of scholarships are available for students who are admitted to the Equine Business degree programme MH405. These scholarships are jointly sponsored by the University and Horse Racing Ireland.
