Applicants under 23 must meet the matriculation (registration) requirements of the National University of Ireland (NUI) as follows: Leaving Certificate or equivalent with a minimum of two recognised subjects at Higher Level Grade C3 and four at Ordinary or Higher Level Grade D3. In addition, the Leaving Certificate subjects required to satisfy Faculty requirements are as shown in the table above.
These subjects may be presented at either Higher or Ordinary Level (additional requirements for individual courses/degrees are provided below).
One Grade E on a Higher Course at Leaving Certificate will be accepted if the candidate has amongst his/her other subjects three Grade C3 awards on Higher Course Papers, or at least one Grade B3 and one Grade C3 on Higher Course Papers at Leaving Certificate.
The subject Mathematics (Leaving Certificate - Foundation Level) will be accepted for matriculation purposes, but not as a substitute for the subject ‘Mathematics’ in faculties or courses for which the subject ‘Mathematics’ is currently an entry requirement. Entry points will not be awarded for this subject.
The Leaving Certificate subject ‘Ghaeilge - Bonnleibhéal’ (Irish - Foundation Level) will not be accepted for matriculation or points purposes.

Applicants are placed in order of merit based on the following points system and places are allocated according to their highest CAO preference to which their points entitle them. The University distinguishes between applicants on equal points scores by appending to each score a randomly-generated number. The combined score/random number is the final determinant of position in order of merit.
| Grade | Higher Level | Ordinary Level |
|---|---|---|
| A1 | 100 | 60 |
| A2 | 90 | 50 |
| B1 | 85 | 45 |
| B2 | 80 | 40 |
| B3 | 75 | 35 |
| C1 | 70 | 30 |
| C2 | 65 | 25 |
| C3 | 60 | 20 |
| D1 | 55 | 15 |
| D2 | 50 | 10 |
| D3 | 45 | 5 |
All subjects carry equal points which are awarded for the six best subjects in any one year, in the Leaving Certificate. These do not have to include subjects required for matriculation. Matriculation and course requirements may be satisfied by an accumulation of subjects over more than one year.
* 25 bonus points will be added to the points score for Leaving Certificate Higher Level Mathematics grade HD3 of higher. This is being implemented for 2012 for a four year pilot period which will then be reviewed.
* The bonus points are included in the overall
points calculation only when Mathematics
is one of the applicant’s best six subjects
following the addition of the bonus.
Please visit the How to Apply - A Level section for more information.
Students must normally have attained the age of seventeen years by 15th January following entry to the University. Where a candidate below that age seeks to enter the University, special application must be made to the University’s President.
