Soccer at NUIM

A few words from NUIM Soccer Facilitator, Barry Prenderville:

Barry PrendervilleMy name is Barry Prenderville, I was brought up in the Lucan area. I played football locally until the age of 13 then moving on to play football for Cherry Orchard. I enjoying a successful time winning many competitions, one of which was the Milk Cup Northern Ireland U16 Section. In the four years I played for Cherry Orchard I went on many trials to various clubs including Manchester Utd and Celtic. I also represented my County at the Kennedy Cup U14, my Country at U15, U16, U18 and U21 levels. I signed as a Professional  player for Coventry City then in the Premier League in 1994 when I was 17.I had just finished my Leaving Certin Colaiste Phadraig, Lucan. I stayed at Coventry for five Seasons, during that time I had a loan spell with Hibernian winning the Scottish 1st Division. I went on to play for Oldham Athletic , Shelbourne FC and St Patricks Athletic FC as a full time Professional . I won the League of Ireland with Shelbourne FC ,the League Cup with St Patricks Athletic  & runner up in the FAI Cup with St Patricks Athletic.

During my time at St Pats I attained a National qualification in exercise and health studies & earned my UEFA B coaching licence . Due mainly to an on- going ankle problem I was forced to retire at 29. During my time at the clubs I played for I took every opportunity to coach in academies and under age teams. For the past eighteen months I have been Director of Football for the senior section of Ballyoulster FC, Celbridge, Kildare. I am delighted to have been given the opportunity at NUI Maynooth as an FAI soccer facilitator. My aims are very clear as I look into year one of this project:-

- Increasing participation across the board whether its recreation or elite standard
- Getting as many people involved as volunteers, as coaches or referees,
- To educate and help people and maintain and develop the soccer clubs within the institution.
- Make the soccer team who represent the college as professional and prepared as possible.
- Finally I intend to make soccer enjoyable for anyone who comes in contact with it in NUI Maynooth.

Regards
