Occasional Students                                               What is SEM?

NUI Maynooth welcomes applications from undergraduate Occasional Students who wish to study specific modules for a semester or one academic year at the University.

Occasional Students do not receive an NUI qualification but receive a transcript of results, issued by the Records Office.

If you are interested in studying as an Occasional Student please contact the relevant department(s) to ascertain which courses / modules you are interested in applying for, for further help in this regard please see departmental modules on our courses website at http://www.nuim.ie/courses.  Please note that the onus is on you to determine whether modules you apply for are offered in the first or second semester and whether or not they clash on the timetable.

Please complete our Undergraduate Occasional Student Application Form, see link below inserting the relevant modules.  Please contact us at 01-708 3822 if you wish to discuss your application.  The application fee is €25.00.

Please be advised that we will consult with the relevant Academic Department(s) before we can advise you as to whether or not your application has been successful.  This may take a reasonable amount of time.  Applicants may, if they wish, contact the Admissions Office for a provisional indication as to the progress of their application.

The assessment method, whether examination or continuous assessment, is the same as per all other NUI Maynooth students.  NO SPECIAL EXAMINATION ARRANGEMENTS WILL BE MADE FOR OCCASIONAL STUDENTS.  Semester 1 examinations take place in January; Semester 2 examinations take place in May.  All results issue in July.  In exceptional circumstances, where a student is required to return to their “home” University to recommence studies in January, there may be the possibility of an assessment in December, subject to approval by both the academic department(s) and the Examinations Office.

Please note that if you wish to add on further modules to your application, following approval, your application will be treated as a new application and you will be liable for the €25.00 application fee again.
