Inclusive Learning Initiative

In keeping with its commitment to removing barriers to access in higher education, NUI Maynooth wishes to invite persons with intellectual disabilities to apply for admission to 1st Year courses commencing September 2011 through the Inclusive Learning Initiative.  The aim of the initiative is to support persons with an intellectual disability to access higher education at NUI Maynooth.

Based on their interests students will be individually supported to select particular subjects in the University. Successful applicants will participate in lectures with their peers and will be encouraged to engage in the social life of the campus. There will be a flexible accreditation process to acknowledge each student’s individual achievement. Students will be expected to attend for a three-year period in the pilot phase of the initiative.

When is this going to happen?

Recruitment and selection will take place in June, July and August for entry in September 2011.

How many places are available?

In the 2011 intake there are up to five places available.

How long is the period of study?

Students will normally spend three or four years at University and will be assisted each year to with course selection. 

Will I have to go every day?

The number of days you need to attend will depend on the modules you are taking.   If you have a job or other things you need to do during the week, you will need to be careful to choose modules that fit your schedule because going to your lectures is very important.   You will also need to make time to go to the library and to enjoy the clubs, societies and sports facilities NUI Maynooth has to offer.

If you are shortlisted you will be invited for interview in the week commencing 18th July, 2011.    Offers will be made to the successful applicants who will be notified in mid August.

How much will it cost?

There is an application fee of €25.  This must be paid by the student when submitting the application.   It is not refundable.   Successful candidates will be required to pay a Student Levy of €87 per annum.  

There is a tuition fee per module and it varies according to the length of the module.     In 2011 the University will make available 5 Bursaries to cover the tuition fees for the students admitted through the Inclusive Learning Initiative.

When you are studying a subject you will need to buy some books.  These may be expensive.  You should budget for spending at least €50 for each module.  You may also need other materials like notebooks and folders to help you organize your work.

What Support will the University provide?

A Support Facilitator will work with each student admitted through the Inclusive Learning Initiative helping them to choose their modules and get used to being a student in NUI Maynooth.

Who can I talk to?

Before you apply you can get lots of information about the University from our website at NUIM.ie.  There will be an open day on the 25th of June when you can visit the campus and look around.

If you are shortlisted, you will be called for an interview and you may ask any questions you might have at the interview.

If you are offered a place in NUI Maynooth you will be able to talk to the Support Facilitator.
