This document can be used as a guideline for entry requirements to NUI Maynooth for applicants who present with EU qualifications. This will act as a guideline only and is not binding. Adjustments to the guideline may be required where changes occur in educational systems, or in trends in grades awarded, in any of the countries described in the document.
English Language requirements
Applicants who have not passed English as a subject in the Irish Leaving Certificate Examination must provide evidence of equivalent Competence in English Language through their school leaving examination or matriculation examination or by achieving the minimum standard in a recognised English language test, as outlined below:
GCE O Level English Language at Grade C or above
GCSE English Language at Grade C or above
GCSE English Literature at Grade C or above
CSE Grade 1 Pass in English
University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate (UCLES) with English at grade C or above (incorporating the Oxford Examining Body’s English as a Foreign Language (Higher Paper)
Or an equivalent level of English in a recognised examination
Applicants must apply through the Central Applications System (CAO). Complete information on the CAO system is available in the CAO Handbook and is also available on the CAO Website at www.cao.ie. Each application must be accompanied by the following documentation:
Certified true copy of official transcripts of academic results
Notarised English translations of qualifications not issued in English.
When EU applicants’ results are being evaluated it will be on the basis of the results of any one examination taken in a single sitting. The first stage of the evaluation process requires an applicant’s results to meet the Minimum Matriculation: and specific programme requirements of a programme. The second stage of the evaluation process involves ranking the applicant’s results relative to other EU applicants. All EU applicants will compete on equivalences as outlined in the tables, which follow. It should be noted that where subjects are being presented to meet course or matriculation requirements, then only those subjects which have an appropriate weighting in the relevant examination and are recognised for matriculation purposes by the National University of Ireland, will be considered.

Summary of Examination system
Studentsprof (from Gymnasium): GCE A Level equivalent
Gymnasium courses are generally four years in length. The curriculum covers three groups of subjects: core subjects (which total about 70% of the course), specialised subjects and electives. Core subjects are:
Icelandic
Modern languages
Social studies
Science
Mathematics
Life skills
Physical education
Specialised subjects account for 21% of the curriculum and electives 9%.
On completion of the four-year course, students take the Matriculation Examination (Stúdentspróf). This is set by individual schools as there are no nationally co-ordinated examinations at this level.
Whilst 70% of the course is general to all subject areas, there are three specialised subject areas for the matriculation examination:
Foreign languages
Natural science
Social science
It is also possible to specialise further within one of these three fields of study.
Additionally, there are courses in fine arts (music, for example) and technical courses, leading to matriculation.
140 credits are required for matriculation. Successful completion of this examination entitles the holder to enter university in Iceland.

Summary of Examination system
Must be from a Liceo of one of the following types: Classica/Scientifica/Tecnica/ Linguistica/Magistrale/Artistica
Note: Liceo Professionale not accepted.
NB applicants must present a school report showing grades attained in each subject
Esame di Stato: GCE A Level equivalent
Maturita: GCE A level equivalent, but not on a subject for subject basis. *Due to high numbers achieving max scores, & the fact that Italian Universities will often use matriculation/entry exams, for programmes over 500 points applicants must also present satisfactory results in the entrance exam, in a cognate subject, of a university of comparable standing to the NUI.
The examinations consist of three written examinations and an oral.
The first written examination assesses the candidates' knowledge of the Italian language, along with the second tuition language in bilingual regions/provinces.
The second written examination is related to one of the disciplinary subjects characterising the upper secondary study course concerned.
The third written examination assesses all the subjects of the last study year (normally the fifth) including a foreign language.
The oral examination consists of an interview on a wide range of topics relating to all the other subjects of the last years curriculum.
Between 10 and 12.
Up to 1998/99: 0-60 (maximum) with 36 as the minimum pass grade. For school work, marking was on a scale of 0-10 with six as the minimum pass-mark.
Since 1998/99: scale 60-100. (15 points per written exam; 35 points for oral exam; remainder for coursework and extra-curricular activities.)

Summary of Examination system
GCE AS Level equivalent; acceptable for programmes up to 500 points. For programmes over 500 points, applicants must also present satisfactory results in a cognate subject at end 1st year in a recognised 3rd level institution of equivalent standing to the NUI
Students follow one of four programmes, general, natural sciences, humanities and vocational, of which five subjects are compulsory for all students and others are compulsory depending on the programme studied. The compulsory subjects include: Latvian language and literature, Mathematics, a foreign language, History, Physical Education, Applied Informatics, Basics of business.
Two different levels - basic (pamatkurss) and advanced (profilkurss) - are offered in each subject.
To be awarded an Atestats par visparejo videjo izglitibu (Certificate of General Secondary Education) students must meet the school graduation requirements which are:
5 examinations (4 out of 5 should be taken centrally and 1 can be taken at school, Latvian and Math are compulsory). National exams are assessed using A-F grading scale and a separate certificate is awarded for those (the results of national exams are also used towards University entry). The examination taken at school is assessed using 1-10 grading scale.
A student should obtain a mark of 5 or higher in all other subjects studied at upper secondary school (subjects are marked through continuous assessment using 1-10 grading scale and are listed in Atestat), it’s allowed to have a grade of 4 but in no more than two subjects.
Previously to graduate students havd to complete the courses in their chosen programme and pass five final examinations, including two examinations in compulsory subjects (Latvian language and literature and another examination which is set nationally each year) and three examinations to be chosen by the student. One of these five examinations must be chosen at the advanced level of the respective subject. The examinations can be taken in years 10, 11 or 12 if the course has been completed. (changed for 2009)
The current marking system is based on a six point scale, which has replaced a 10-point system, in 2002-3 (this in turn replaced the traditional 5-grade system):
A 10
B 8-9
C 6-7
D 4-5
E 3
F 1-2
The Certificate of General Secondary Education is accompanied by a list of marks given to 12 subjects, including 5 compulsory and 7 elective. From these subjects at least 2 must be marked as profilkurss (advanced). NB the grades are not based on the percentages in the previous scale.
Guideline University Requirements
Subject pass mark for University purposes: Grade D or 4.
Minimum Matriculation: Minimum school graduation as above plus at least 2 Grade C in examined subjects
New system: Grade C in 2 subjects at Advanced level and remainder at least grade D. Standard of English must meet requirements below and all programme subject requirements must be met.
Pre 2009: Grade C/6 in 2 subjects at Advanced level and remainder at least grade D. Standard of English must meet requirements below and all programme subject requirements must be met.
English Language Competence: Grade B in Advanced level or equivalent English Language competence (see page 3)

GCE AS Level equivalent. Acceptable for programmes up to 500 points. For programmes over 500 points, applicants must also present satisfactory results in a cognate subject at end 1st year in a recognised 3rd level institution of equivalent standing to the NUI.
Minimum of 10 subjects, though not all are examined. There are two streams, Humanities/Arts and Maths/Sciences. Many subjects can be taken at 2 levels, School level and State level.
At school level, marks are awarded on a scale of 1 to 10 as follows:
Excellent = 10 92-100%
Very Good = 9 82-91%
Good = 8 74-81%
Highly Satisfactory = 7 66-73%
Satisfactory = 6 58-65%

Subjects which are taken as options but which are not graded are indicated on the certificate with the word Deltatt (has followed the teaching).
Students are given a Vitnemål (represented as 'V') to indicate exams passed. 'K' indicates that a student has followed a course, but not completed all requirements necessary to pass.
Students usually take 7 examined subjects. These are taken over the 3 years of the Vitnemål programme.

Count 4 subjects (including 2 obligatory) using both advanced or basic score per subject. For advanced level use score * 1.0 For basic score *0.6. Oral result can be substituted for written if it is better at the appropriate level. (As this calculation would result in a possible score of 640 for someone with 100% in all subjects, 95-100 are all calculated at 94 – this is to reflect the spread of grading in the system).
"the student is allowed to choose the level of each of the three compulsory subjects. The additional subjects (optional ones - max. 3) must always be taken at the extended level. (There are three levels possible for foreign language exams: basic, extended, and bilingual – for bilingual class students; the latter being comparable to C1.)"

The Bacalaureat is comprised of 2 or 3 oral examinations and 4 or 5 written examinations,
Grading is made on a scale of 1 to 10, with 5 as the minimum pass mark
Each exam (Proba) is marked from 1 to 10 with 10 being the best, using two decimals for written exams (e.g. 9.44 or 9.14 is a valid mark) and an integer for an oral exam
Guideline University Requirements
Subject pass mark for University purposes: 5 – to pass overall, a student must obtain an average score of at least 6.00 and at least 5.00 at each of the individual exams.
Note: in some of the profiles a higher standard of mathematics is available (M1). This should not effect the overall points calculation as the final percentage is a weighted average. However where Maths is a required subject M1 could meet Mathematics requirements at a lower grade.
Minimum Matriculation: Total of 5 passes including 2 @ 8. Min Average of 6. Standard of English must meet requirements below and all programme subject requirements must be met.

The Maturita exam consists of two parts - external and internal. The external part of Maturita exam includes tests prepared and evaluated externally. It is NUCEM wherein these tests are being prepared. NUCEM does so for 10 subjects including mother languages (Slovak, Hungarian), Slovak language for schools with the Hungarian language of instructions, Mathematics, and foreign languages in two levels B1 and B2 of the European Reference Framework for Languages (English, German, French, Russian, Spanish and Italian). Furthermore, there are special adapted tests for students with special needs prepared. [Note B2 better than B1]

Summary of Examination system
Is considered comparable to the overall GCE Advanced/Scottish Advanced Higher standard
The framework of subjects devised in 1995 focuses on four broad areas of education, languages (first, second, third or classical), humanities, science and mathematics, arts and physical education. Additionally, there are broad courses combining specific basic subjects with options. The award of the maturity certificate is based on a combination of final written and oral examinations combined with continual assessment. The examination must be taken in five subjects, which include first language, second national language, mathematics, a specific option and another subject approved under cantonal regulations.
Various marking schemes are used depending on the canton. The most common are as follows:
A scale of 1 - 10 (maximum) with a minimum pass-mark of 4.

* To a maximum of four different recognised subjects, which are not mutually exclusive; AS grades, if presented, will normally only be accepted from the year immediately preceding the grades in the A2 subjects.
Grades in the same subject in A2 and AS level cannot be combined. Only GCE grades awarded at the same date can be considered for computation. AVCE subjects are not accepted for matriculation or entry purposes.
For 2010 and 2011 A-level grades achieved pre 2010 will be scored according to the pre 2010 scoring system. From 2012 onwards they will be scored on the new system but using the mid point between A and A* for the A grade (since A* was not available to these candidates). This will also apply to A-levels attained under old regulations in Spring 2010 and for some subjects, owing to a change in syllabus, some students will be examined under old regulations in Summer 2010.
